Are QBs that played with Reggie Bush overrated?

I have a theory about certain quarterbacks that were picked in the1st round of the NFL draft. They are SF 49ers #1 overall pick in 2005 Alex Smith, and Arizona Cardinals Matt Leinart. They were both expected to become Franchise quarterbacks and be the face of their respective teams for the next decade. Both Matt and Alex have become nothing short of an epic failure in performance, expectations, barely competing to keep a back up role on the roster. Over paid and underachieving, these two QBs have been successful before turning pro. When scouts and recruiters were evaluating the talent of Smith and Leinart, did they over look the common denominator before making them number one on the draft boards? REGGIE BUSH? Is it possible that Alex Smith, who played with Reggie at Helix high school in La Mesa ca, was recruited from Utah by his winning percentage that may not be from Alex Smiths talent, but Bush's ability to win games catch passes and  run faster than opposing defenses? The same thing goes for USC superstar quarterback Matt Leinart who played with the Heisman Trophy winning Reggie Bush during his years at USC under coach Pete Carroll. Did Matt win all those games and look like a poised QB because he had the comfort of  knowing he could hand the ball to Reggie or throw a short pass and Reggie would take it the distance? Even Drew Brees of the Saints couldn't make it to the big game in San Diego, yet when he got traded to New Orleans and played with Reggie Bush, he wins a Super Bowl? Just a coincidence or are we being fooled into believing these quarterbacks are the real deal and they can be franchise quarterbacks and play up to the ability they were drafted be. Let me know your thoughts on my Reggie Bush theory. Am I overreacting, or do I have a valid point of view in my speculation? Only time will tell if Smith and Leinart can become top ranked NFL quarterback, but they are both running out of time and the owners are running out money by them on their payroll and roster.

  1. I agree that both Smith and Leinart are overrated, but it's hard to point to one reason for why this is. Both Smith and Leinart played for college coaches that are / were excellent at showcasing player talent. Scot McCloughan pointed to the difficulties of evaluating spread players like Smith under Meyer. Carroll was successful recruiting by promising NFL dollars because he ran pro style offenses and defenses, and scouts knew he was trying to get his players NFL ready.

I think Smith was a bust because he wasn't ready for the NFL game, and I think teams were more comfortable recruiting Leinart because at least they knew he had some of the NFL terminology down.
